IHT Planning

Will and Tax Planning

Inheritance Tax (IHT) is a tax that may be payable on your estate when you pass away, which can reduce the amount you leave to your beneficiaries. Your estate includes everything you own—such as property, money, possessions, and shares.

When Is Inheritance Tax Payable?

Inheritance Tax is generally charged on estates valued above £325,000. Any amount over this threshold is taxed at 40%, unless you are leaving your estate to a surviving spouse or civil partner, in which case no IHT is due. There are also additional allowances and exemptions that may apply, depending on your circumstances.

It is important to note that if you are permanently resident in the UK, any assets you own abroad—such as a holiday home—will be included in the calculation of your estate for IHT purposes. Similarly, foreign nationals with UK-based assets above the threshold may also be liable for IHT on those assets.
